Kolka álfur

Kolka is obviously getting in to the christmas mood. We were out playing in the snow today and we took our eyes of her for few seconds. When we looked back at her she was dancing. Here you can see her dance.

Ball crazy Kolka
Sunday, 25 November 2007
Kolka is crazy about balls, she just loves to run after them and catch and fetch them.

Because of how fun it is to play fetch we buy a lot of balls and therefore Kolka has a good collection of them. At first Kolka didn't want to return the balls but she now realizes that the sooner she hands it over the sooner she gets to run after it again.

Here is Kolka with her collection. We hadn't realized how big the collection was until we started to gather them from under the furniture.

And here is a picture of Kolka trying to get one of her balls from under the cabinet. It's often very funny to watch her trying to get it. Sometimes she succeeds but most often her front legs and head are just too short :)

Welcome to our new website
Sunday, 18 November 2007
We have been rather busy putting up the new homepage so there hasn´t been much time to post news of Kolka lately. That will hopefully change now since this site is set up in a comfortable content management system where we can update it quickly and easely. The old site was handmade in html and therefor boring and slow to update.

Many things have been going on.

Kolka passed the herding test and we are of course happy about that. The Herding Club plans to have a joined training sessions in the near future to keep on developing and training our dogs with their herding nature. That will hopefully be next spring or summer.

We came across pictures and text about the clicker training course we went to last summer with Kolka. The trainer, Monika is a breeder of the Icelandic Sheepdog. Here is the site. The first half of the page is in Icelandic but the second half is in English. She wrote for example about Kolka:
"This is such a cute dog with a happy character, she just makes you smile when she is learning because she always gets this huge grin on her face." See here .

We are very fond of clicker training and so is Kolka like you can see in the photos.
Here is a video of one of Monika´s dog helping with the laundry and of course she is using clicker training

Health

Kolka had her eyes checked out by Finn Bøserup a specialist from Denmark and her eyes are healthy. Kolka was also checked out for TSH and T4 and the resaults were good: "Thyroxine and TSH concentrations are within normal range. Hypothyroidism is unlikely." Last but not least we got results from her hip x-rays and the resaults were A/A.

Bono, Kolka's sister, got great results at a PON-club show last august. She won best-in-show and Nami their mom got BIS9. Congratulations Ana with this great result.

Kolka and the sheeps

syning

Kolka had a test today - a herding nature test with the herding group (in the Icelandic Kennel Club). Last year 26 sheepdogs took the test and 17 passed and 9 failed. The purpose is to test the dogs herding nature. The model is from the American Herding Breed Association.

Last wednesday we had a practise run at the farm the test was held. That was the very first time she encountered sheeps (at least the first time she got to run free with them) and her nature was obvious. We kept the time short, just to let her know that it was ok to herd the sheeps and praised her alot when she did.

Today on the testday she did very well and we think she passed (we'll know next week and post the resaults here). Kolka was VERY interested in the sheeps and both hearded them and cut them off. The sheeps ran from Kolka when she was hearding them and when they got to the end of the fence they sometimes turned around and faced Kolka, tried to headbutt in her general direction with-out any results - Kolka was quicker on her feet but always came back very sure of herself. Even after the test when we were outside the fence talking to people she stared at the sheeps and barked and whined because she wanted to keep on hearding them.

We had a great time and it was very interesting to see the nature of Kolka being so strong.

Here is a short video from today and wednesday.
